Women's Tennis Places Four On ITA Scholar-Athletes List

BOSTON, Mass.—Four women's tennis players have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (4.0) scale or better for the 2012-13 academic year.

Junior Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) earned the award for the second consecutive season, while first-year players Shihyu Yang (Taipei, Taiwan), Ngoc Le (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and Cindy Lee (Pomona, Lee) each earned the recognition for the first time.

The Beacons showed tremendous determination during the 2012-13 season, staying in contention for a playoff spot in the Little East Tournament for the entire year, despite losing three of their starters from the 2011 season. Counts teamed up with seniors Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) and Wendy Steinman (Dudley, Mass) at the top of the UMB lineup, while the Beacons three first-year players made up the core of the Beacons' bottom three.

UMass Boston will open their 2013-14 season Friday August 30 at MCLA at 3 p.m.
