Women’s Tennis Closes Out Fall Season With Win On Senior Day

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – After a tumultuous beginning to their 2018 fall season, women's tennis closed out their campaign on a high note as they earned their second straight conference win with a 5-4 victory over Western Connecticut State University Saturday evening at the Weymouth Club.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons earned the huge win to finish the regular season in eighth place in the Little East Conference.  Despite starting the year not knowing how things were going to play, the Beacons came together throughout the fall and closed out the campaign with back-to-back conference victories.  They earned their first win of the year after defeating conference newcomer Castleton University.

For the second straight match, the Beacons closed out doubles play in the lead as they held a 2-1 advantage following wins at the second and third doubles.  Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) and Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) earned an 8-2 win at the second flight, while Fatema Abdoo (Springfield, Mass.) and Baila Mir (Somerset, Mass.) earned an 8-0 in the third flight.

In singles play, Moriarty registered a 6-1, 6-3 win at third flight.  Mir and Abdoo registered wins to help the Beacons clinch the victory. Mir earned a 6-1, 6-1 decision at fifth flight. Abdoo dominated at sixth flight with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Saturday's match was the senior day match for Mir, who joined the Beacons in the fall
  • Mir ended the fall with the lone winning record for the Beacons in singles play as she finished with a 5-4 record

The Beacons are tentatively scheduled to face Emerson College on March 31 at 12 p.m. at BC High School Courts.
