Providence, R.I.--Third-seeded Rhode Island College booked its ticket into the semifinal round of the 2008 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament this afternoon with a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston at the Rhode Island Tennis Courts. Senior Meg Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) clinched the match for the Anchorwomen with a straight-set win at top-flight singles.
Rhode Island College (8-7) will advance to face second-seeded Bridgewater State College on Oct. 18 at top-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The Bears dispatched seventh-seeded Salem State College, 5-2, also in quarterfinal round action this afternoon.
The second-flight doubles combination of sophomore Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, R.I.) and freshman Gabriela Batek (Greenville, R.I.) gave the Anchorwomen the early advantage with an 8-3 victory. Junior Julie Bannon (Narragansett, R.I.) and Funk edged the Beacons' top-pair of junior Emily Johnson (Saugus, Mass.) and sophomore Carolina Gonzalez (Bridgewater, Mass.), 8-6. Rhode Island College completed the doubles sweep as sophomore Kim Field (Barrington, R.I.) and senior Ashley St. Amand (West Warwick, R.I.) prevailed over senior Lauren O'Connor (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore Brittany Engel (Freehold, N.J.), 9-7.
Batek put the hosts on the verge of a semifinal berth with a straight-set (6-3, 6-0) victory at fifth-flight singles. The captain closed out the match 6-3, 6-0 to set up a rematch with Bridgewater State, who defeated Rhode Island College earlier this season, 7-2, in Bridgewater.
UMass Boston, who had won four of its past five matches, complete the campaign with a 6-6 overall mark.
