CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston women's defeated Newbury College, 8-1, this afternoon on the campus on Newbury College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Before the match, the Nighthawks honored senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT) for her outstanding contributions to the women's tennis program and Newbury athletics, over her four year career.
Valentine picked up Newbury's lone win defeating UMass-Boston senior Brittany Engel (Freehold, NJ) in third singles. After winning the first set decisively, 6-1, Engel rebounded in the second set, edging out Valentine, 7-6, to force a set three. But Valentine came away victorious as she held on to defeat Engel in the tie-breaker, 10-6.
UMass-Boston sophomore Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) paved the way to victory for the Beacons, claiming victories in both singles and doubles. She paired up with freshman Destanee Ringler (Scituate, MA) to win first doubles, 8-1 then defeated Newbury sophomore Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH) in first singles, 6-0, 6-3. Engel and teammate, sophomore Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA) also played solid in the victory, sweeping third doubles, 8-0.
Newbury drops to 4-11 on the season with the loss while the win improves UMass-Boston to 8-7. The Nighthawks return to the courts on Saturday, October 16, 2010 for the New England Collegiate Conference Championship hosted by Bay Path College at the Enfield Tennis Club in Enfield, CT. The Beacons will wrap up their regular season the same day with a 1:00 p.m. match in Gorham, ME against the University of Southern Maine.
