OLD WESTBURY, New York – In their 2011 season opener despite putting forth a tremendous effort, the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s tennis (0-1) squad was defeated by New York Institute of Technology (1-0) by the final score of 7-2 Friday afternoon at the NYIT Tennis Complex.
Walking away with their first wins of the year was juniors Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA/Archbishop Williams). Steinman was victorious at fourth singles as she defeated her NYIT opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
After winning the first set 6-3, Nguyen had to battle back in the second after falling into an early 2-5 hole. She would manage to battle back and defeat Alexis Tyson by the final of 7-5 to earn the Beacons their second point of the afternoon.
NYIT jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following a clean sweep in doubles play. MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouth Port, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA/Newton North) earned the lone doubles point for the Beacons.
In singles play, NYIT extended their lead to 6-0 after taking the first three singles matches. Following the back-to-back wins by the Beacons, NYIT would secure their seventh and final point.
Women’s tennis returns to action tomorrow when they take on Farmingdale State at 9 a.m. then York College (NY) at 3:30 p.m.
