BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Mary Moran and Tegan Talbot the visiting Huskies of the University of Southern Maine (5-3, 3-2 LEC) defeated women’s tennis (3-5, 2-2 LEC) by the final score of 5-4 in closely contested Little East Conference match, Sunday afternoon at the Boston College High School Tennis courts.
Both Moran and Tegan were winners in singles play, and combined to earn the Huskies lone doubles victory Sunday afternoon. For the host Beacons Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA) was solid as she notched a doubles win with teammate Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA), while also picking up her seventh singles victory as well.
Counts and Nguyen defeated their Southern Maine opponents Emily Boutin and Ali Hartley, 8-2 to give the Beacons an early 1-0 lead. Talbot and Moran then evened the score at 1-1 with their 8-5 win at first flight. Katherine Perkins (Dennis, MA) and Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA) put UMass back in front with their 8-4 win at third flight to make it 2-1 going into singles play.
In head-to-head competition, the Huskies would take victories in first, second, third, and fourth singles. Nguyen’s win over Molly Morrill (6-3, 6-1) would at the time make it 3-3 on the scorecard. Unfortunately back-to-back wins at first and fourth flight would give the Huskies the edge. Perkins was also victorious in singles play with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Meaghan Robinson, which closed out Sunday’s match.
Women’s tennis returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Salem State University for a 3:30 p.m. Little East Conference match.
