QUINCY, Mass. – The strong play of the women’s tennis team (4-5) continued as they recorded a 9-0 non-conference win over Eastern Nazarene College, Wednesday afternoon. The shutout victory marked the second of the year for the Beacons, who have now two of their last three matches.
To open up Wednesday’s match the Katherine Perkins (Dennis, MA) and Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA) cruised to an 8-0 win to give UMass an early 1-0 lead. MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouth Port, MA) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) then extended the Beacons lead to 2-0 following their 8-3 win at first doubles.
Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA) and Taraneh Farhangmehr (Newton, MA) had the toughest double match of the day as they pulled out a 9-8 (8-6) victory. In singles play Kloczewiak added another win at first flight with her 6-0, 6-1 win.
From there Steinman made 4-0 with her win at third flight. At fifth flight Perkins downed her Eastern Nazarene opponent 6-2, 6-2. Arrigo then cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory to keep the Beacons winning ways going.
Just like their doubles match, Nguyen and Farhangmehr both had extremely tough singles matches, but managed to each pull out the wins. Nguyen earned a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 win at fourth flight, while Farhangmehr earned a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 10-5 decision at sixth flight.
Women’s tennis returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Wentworth of Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. on the Boston College High School tennis courts.
