Track and Field Has another Record Saturday at Tufts Invite

MEDFORD, Mass. – Led by Kebba Nasso's (Attleboro, Mass.) two record setting performances in the 400 meter dash and triple jump, the UMass Boston track and field teams had another strong Saturday as they competed in the 2012 Tufts University Invitational.

Nasso started his afternoon off by breaking the program record for the 400 which has remained atop the record book since it was set in 1988 by Pat Sylvain. Nasso broke the original record by 61 hundredths of a second (50.21) to place second in the event, behind UMass Lowell's Evan White.

His second record setting performance came in the triple jump with his leap of 42-06.25 feet which earned him first place overall. Henry Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) also added his name to the Indoor Track and Field record board as his time of 1:28.69 set a new program mark in the 600 meter run.

Also competing in Saturday's meet was Dylon King (Boston, Mass.), who finished in 25th place (8.17) in the 60 meter dash. King along with four other runners then competed in the 200 meter dash. Led by Norbert Simmons' time of 23.88, which earned him third overall, the Beacons saw Ervin Lofton (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finish in 10th place, followed by Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) in 27th, Lenford Coote (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 32nd, and King in 33rd.

Simmons would then place 10th in the 400 meter dash with his time of 54.49 seconds. Lofton finished in 13th place with a time of 55.18, followed by Hart in 16th place with a time of 55.67 seconds.

Finishing just one second behind Morales in the 600 in 10th place was Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, Mass.), who crossed the finish line with a time of 1:29.30. Andre Malcolm (Cambridge, Mass.) would finish the 600 in 13th place, followed by Chhenlee Ly (Leominster, Mass.), Jeff Laurore, and Willie Francois (Roslindale, Mass.).

Xhulio Uruci (Newton, Mass.) and Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) would be the only two runners from UMass Boston to compete in the 1,000 meter run. Uruci also competed in the 1 mile run as well. In the 1,000 Uruci took ninth with his time of 2:38.34. Kerin finished in 14th place with his time of 2:39.72. In the mile, Uruci recorded a time of 4:33.54 to finish in 10th place overall.

The 4x400 meter relay team Abdul, Nasso, Kerin, and Morales recorded a combined time of 3:32.90 to win the event, defeating their closest competitors by more than six seconds. Moving into the field events Abdul jumped his way to a fifth place finish in the long jump with his final mark of 18-10.00. King went on to finish in 11th place (17-04.25) in the event, while Coote took 17th place in the shot put with his throw of 31-04.50 feet.

On the women's side of Saturday's meet, Samara Faustin (Boston, Mass.) led the Beacons in the 60 meter dash as the freshman finished in seventh place with her time of 8.34 seconds. Ari Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) posted a 10th place finish in the 200 and a 5th place finish in the 400 meter dashes respectively. In the 200 she recorded a time of 28.44 seconds, while in the 400 she crossed the finish line with a time of 1:03.38.

In the field events Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) competed in both the shot put and weight throw. In the shot, Kloczewiak finished in 23rd place with a toss of 23-08.75 feet. The junior then recorded a 14th place finish in the weight with her final throw marked at 30-09.25 feet.

Track and field return to action in two weeks when they compete in the Boston University Terrier Classic.
