NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Little East Conference has announced this year's major award winners for the 2012-13 Indoor Track and Field season. Earning the program's first Rookie of the Year honor was freshman Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.) who was named the 2013 LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year.
McGuffie becomes the fourth Beacon in the last two indoor/outdoor track seasons to earn a Rookie of the Year honor, and only the second Beacon to earn the major honor at the conclusion of the indoor season. Last year Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) became the first male athlete to ever earn a Little East Conference Rookie of the Year accolade.
In her first season at UMass Boston, McGuffie wasted little time taking over as one of the Beacons top field competitors. The program record holder in the long jump, McGuffie leaped her way to a first place finish at this year's Little East/New England Alliance Indoor Championship meet when she recorded a distance of 17-09.50 feet, shattering the original program record.
That jump would also qualify the Lynn native for the ECAC Indoor Championship meet in New York City. She would finish that meet with a distance of 17-02.75 feet. McGuffie was the only Beacon to record distances of 17 feet or more in the long jump, as she ended the indoor season with the team's top three distances in the event.
During the season, McGuffie was named the Little East Conference Rookie Field Athlete of the Week twice.
