Morales and O’Brien Sitting Second After Day One of Tufts Multi-Event

MEDFORD, Mass. – After the first day of the Tufts University Multi-Event senior Henry Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) is sitting second in his first Decathlon of 2013, while junior Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) is also sitting second in her first-ever Heptathlon.  Morales closed out the first day of competition with 3,205 points, while O'Brien closed out her Saturday with 2,272 points. 

Morales, who already holds the program record in the Decathlon recorded the second fastest time in the 100 meter dash to start off the afternoon.  The Chelsea native finished with an overall time of 11.56 seconds to earn 740 points.  He then recorded the third best jump in the long jump with a distance of 20-01.00 feet to earn an additional 613 points.  From there he recorded a distance of 33-07.50 feet in the shot put, before earning a height of 5-08.75 feet in the high jump.  He closed out the afternoon with the second fastest time in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.07 seconds.

For O'Brien her day got off to a slow start as she posted a time of 18.86 in the 100 meter hurdles to earn 408 points.  From there the junior would battle back to finish second in the high jump with a leap of 5-00.50 feet, before taking third in the shot put with a throw of 27-06.50 feet.  In the final event, the 200 meter dash, the junior defeated all of her competitors to catapult herself into second place with her time of 26.22 seconds.  The closest competitor in the event finished almost a full second behind the Stoneham native.

Morales will be competing in the 110 meter hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin, and finally the 1,500 meter run tomorrow afternoon.  O'Brien is scheduled to compete in the long jump, the javelin throw, and the 800 meter run.
