UMass Boston Track & Field Enjoys Strong Showing In Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass.—Sophomore Wadeline Jonathas (Gonaives, Haiti) won three titles to lead UMass Boston track & field at the 6th Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jonathas picked up where she left off as a freshman, as set a pair of meet records in her two individual races and was a part of the winning 4x400 women's relay. 

She opened her day by winning the 500M in a program and meet record time of 1:17.43. Just over an hour later, Jonathas took the track against a stacked field in the 200M and set another meet record with a first-place time of 25.02 seconds.  

In the women's 4x400M, Olivia Burnes (Paxton, Mass.), Lexy Bean (Danvers, Mass.), Jonathas and Ashley Hernandez (Miami, Fla.) came from behind to win in 4:09.21. The win marked the first time that the women's team had won the 4x400M relay in the six-year history of the meet.

UMass Boston also had an extremely strong showing in the 60M dash.

On the women's side, senior Taylor Driggers (Lisbon, Conn.) and freshman Abigail Jean-Baptiste (Milton, Mass.) both earned spots in the finals in a 78-woman field. Driggers finished fourth overall in the finals with a PR of 8.12 seconds, while Jean-Baptiste finished sixth (8.16 seconds) in the finals

On the men's side, senior Dom Nda (Pittsfield, Mas.s) and sophomore Bless Amedoadzi (Boston, Mass.) both qualified for the finals. Nda finished first amongst collegiate runners and fourth overall with a time of 7.03, while Amedodoazi ran a personal-best time of 7.04 seconds to finish sixth.

Freshman Virgil Harrell III (Hamden, Conn.) took second place overall in his collegiate debut in the men's 500M. The freshman sprinter posted a time of 1:08.71 to finish second overall.

The Beacons also had three men finish in the top 20 of the men's 200M. Junior transfer Anthony Nguyen (23.07), Harrell III (23.35) and senior Garth Miriyoga (Johannesburg, South Africa)all finished in the top-19 in a field of 136. 

UMass Boston men's 4x400M team of Nguyen, Blake Lewis (Holden, Mass.), Harrell III and Adrian Higgins (Milton, Mass.) finished seventh overall with a time of 3:31.28.

In the field events, juniors Logan Mitchell (Franklin, Mass.) and Xavier Hill (Hyde Park, Mass.) finished fourth and five overall in the men's triple jump. Mitchell leaped 12.87M, while Hill came in at 12.81M.

Driggers and Jean-Baptiste led the women's field performers with top seven performances in the long jump. Driggers jumped 5.39M to finish second, while Jean-Baptiste finished seventh overall with a leap of 5.00M.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Jonathas easily broke the meet records in the 200M and 500M. She beat the previous 200M mark by .54 seconds and in her first time ever running the 500M, she broke the previous record by two seconds.
  • Saturday's meet marked one of the largest fields in the history of the UMass Boston Indoor Open Meet. There were over 1,100 entrants prior to the competition starting.

The Beacons will close out first semester action on Saturday, when they travel to the Rhode Island College Invitational.
