LA VERNE, California – In their 2012 season debut the 16th ranked Beacons (0-2) dropped both their matches to nationally ranked California Lutheran (1-0) and the University of La Verne (1-0) Friday afternoon at the University of La Verne as part of the 2012 Pacific Coast Classic.
In the opener Cal Lutheran defeated UMass Boston 25-21, 25-18, 25-19, while in the nightcap La Verne defeated the Beacons 25-17 in all three sets.
On the day, senior All-American Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) finished with 12 kills on 34 attempts. Junior hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted 10 kills to finish second on the day. Porter also finished with 13 digs to record the Beacons only double-double.
Freshmen setters Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) combined for 37 assists respectively. Defensively the Beacons posted two solo blocks and 12 block assists, while senior Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 21 digs.
In the opener UMass faced off against the sixth ranked Regals of Cal Lutheran. Thompson led the Beacons with six kills, while Cal Lutheran saw Kyle McLogan score 21 kills. Rachel Smith finished second on the team with 14 kills. Jackie Russell posted 39 assists to lead the Regals, while three players finished in double-figures in digs.
The nightcap saw three players from La Verne finish with 10 or more kills. Thompson led the Beacons with six kills, followed by Porter with five kills. Morgan Donohue fueled La Verne's offense with 41 assists.
UMass Boston returns to action tomorrow when they take on Minnesota Morris at 9 a.m., followed by North Central College (IL) at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
