Volleyball Downs Trinity (CT) For Third Straight Win
HARTFORD, Conn. – In what was supposed to be another tough test against a regionally ranked opponent, turned out to a be dominant performance as UMass Boston volleyball defeated Trinity College (Conn.) by the final of 3-1 Tuesday evening.
UMass, who is currently ranked fourth in New England bounced back from a tough 25-23 first set loss to defeat the 15th ranked Bantams in three straight games by the finals of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-8. Wednesday's contest marked the second-straight year that the two teams have shared the hardwood while both being ranked on the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVBA) regional poll.
Pacing the Beacons offense in the non-conference match was Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) with 11 kills. Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Brooke Nemethy (Oviedo, Fla.) finished second on the team with seven kills each.
Setters Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) combined for 25 assists to help the Beacons to their third straight win. Defensively, Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) was sensational tallying 23 digs in the match. Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was next in line for the Beacons defensive effort with her 13 digs.
As a squad UMass was solid at the net totaling eight team blocks in the win, which included three block assists from Molly Witzmann (Encinitas, Calif.), Clemons, and Thompson.
Combined UMass struggled in the early on-goings, but by the time they got to the fourth set, the Beacons were red-hot as they hit .421 attack percentage. On the day, they finished hitting .234 with 41 kills.
Volleyball returns to action on Thursday when they host Southern Maine at 6 p.m. in a Little East Conference match. Thursday's match will be played at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
