SAN ANTONIO, Texas – On their first day of the Trinity University Invitational, volleyball had to go the distance in both matches as they earned a split first falling to Augsburg College, 2-3, before picking up a 3-2 win over the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling into an early 2-0 hole against Augsburg, the Beacons fought their way back first taking a 25-17 win the in third set. They then tied the match at 2-2 with a 26-24 in the fourth. In the fifth and deciding set, the Beacons had their chances to put away their opponents, but fell just short as Augsburg snuck out a 16-14 win.
In their second match of the day, UMass Boston and the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor went back-and-forth with the Beacons dropping the first set 25-20. In the second set, the Beacons evened the score at 1-1 with a 25-17 win. UMHB then responded with a 25-21 win in the third, but UMB would then battle back with a 25-19 win in the fourth. They then secured the victory as they cruised to a 15-6 win in the fifth set.
In their first match of the day, the Beacons were ultimately defeated by their inability to keep the ball in play. Through the five set match, UMB was charged with 16 service errors, seven reception errors, and 25 attack errors. The Beacons hit just .180 in the loss, but did show tremendous heart as they rallied back from a huge deficit. Four Beacons finished with 10 or more kills, with Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) leading the team with 12 kills. Christina Elliott (Camas, Wash.) led the team with 23 assists, and two aces. Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) combined for 18 digs, while Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) posted three block assists.
Against UMHB, Shi finished with a match-high 18 kills, while Murphy closed out the five-set battle with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .500. Baker quarterbacked the offense with her 22 assists, while Glavan and Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) combined for just 22 digs respectively. Murphy and Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.) each recorded four blocks to lead the Beacons at the net.
