WALTHAM, Mass. – After a tough start to their 2017 season, the Beacons volleyball team finally had enough with losing, as they pounded out a pair of wins defeating both RIT and Anna Maria College by the finals of 3-0 Saturday afternoon on the campus of Brandeis University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In their toughest test of the day, the Beacons played their best team volleyball of the season. The Beacons would earn a 25-17 win in the first set, before picking up a 25-18 victory in the second. In the final set, UMB had to hold-off a Tigers squad which would not go down quietly to earn a 25-20 victory.
For the Beacons, they hit a combined .270 in their first win of the coach Houlihan era. Setter Christina Elliott (Camas, Wash.) collected 16 assists, to help fuel the Beacons offense. Junior Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) was very busy in the three-set victory, as the All-American registered a match-high 13 kills, and hit .370 in the win. Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio), who has turned into one of the Beacons most versatile players this season, had her best match by far, as she totaled eight kills, 13 assists, and eight digs, while also hitting .357.
Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) collected 15 digs, and had five aces in what is quickly becoming her best season ever in a Beacons uniform. Sophomore middle Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.) threw-down a combined three solo blocks and also had one block assist in the shutout victory.
In the nightcap, UMB used a total team effort to collect their second 3-0 win over 2017. As a squad, the Beacons hit .333, with Doyle and Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) combining for 17 kills respectively. Freshman setter Carsen Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) finished with nine assists, also had a pair of aces. Sidnee Berch (Boca Raton, Fla.) took over as the libero for the Beacons and finished with 15 digs.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Saturday's match with Anna Maria College marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams
- All-time UMass Boston is now 3-1 against RIT, with Saturday's meeting marking the first since the 2013 season

The Beacons will back to Waltham on Wednesday to take on the Judges of Brandeis University at 7 p.m.
