Kate (McWhorter) Carlson ’10, one of the most distinguished players in UMass Boston volleyball history, returns to her alma mater for the 2013 season as an assistant coach.
A two-year member of the program, having played for current head coach Terry Condon, Carlson ended her career as a two-time First Team All-Little East Conference selection and Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year. In 2009 she led the Beacons to the program’s first conference championship and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
That year she also earned the program’s first New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First Team All-Region accolades. She also became the first player in program history to be named a Third Team AVCA All-American.
To date, Carlson ranks amongst the top players in program history in multiple categories including attack percentage in a season (.385) and career kills (978).
Since graduating from UMass Boston, Carlson has coached at both the club and high school level. She has served as the head coach of both the Smash Volleyball Club and the Mass. Juniors Volleyball Club. Over the past three years, she served as the assistant coach at Needham High School in Needham, MA. Carlson also serves as a teacher’s assistant at Needham High School as well.
Carlson graduated from UMass Boston with her bachelor of arts in 2010 and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Special Education at UMass Boston.
