WALTHAM, MA - Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) combined to collect 22 kills and 25 digs while freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) registered 21 kills and 25 digs over two matches to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston over Rhode Island College, 3-0, and Williams College, 3-1, this evening in pool play at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA. With the pair of victories, the Beacons remain a perfect 7-0 on the season to improve on their best start in school history. The losses drop Rhode Island College to 4-4 and Williams to 1-1 on the season.
UMass Boston was in total control over the Anchorwomen early, earning the first set point convincingly, 25-8. RIC battled in the second set but eventually fell, 25-19, before the Beacons 25-9 thrashing in the third set to secure the victory.
Freshman outside hitter Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, CA) led the way with 10 kills while Thompson and Porter chipped in with eight and seven kills, respectively. Porter also registered a match-high 14 digs to go along with three aces and a pair of solo blocks.
The Beacons stayed hot against Williams, avenging a 3-1 loss suffered in last year's second round of the NCAA tournament at Tufts University. UMass Boston was able to jump out to a quick start with a 25-14 first set win before squeaking by in the second set, 25-22. The Ephs made things interesting with a 25-18 third set win before the Beacons closed out the match in the fourth set, 25-18.
Both Thompson and Porter registered double-doubles in the win, Thompson with 14 kills and 14 digs while Porter picked up 14 kills, 11 digs as well as a career-high five aces. Sophomore libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) notched a team-high 18 digs in the win.
Running the offense, junior setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) dished out 41 assists in the two victories while sophomore setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) chipped in with 25 helpers to go along with 12 digs against RIC. Hanneman also notched 10 digs versus Williams.
With the victories, the Beacons advance to tomorrow's (9/11) championship round featuring Trinity (CT) and Brandeis University. UMass Boston will face Trinity at 1:00 PM and Brandeis in a 3:00 PM tilt.
