BOSTON, MA - Junior transfer Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) smashed a game-high 14 kills and hit a robust .591 and freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) set for 31 assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team over visiting Suffolk University tonight, 25-6, 25-18, 25-14, at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 2-3, while the Rams fall to 0-1 in their season-opener.
McWhorter made just one attack error on the night and added a season-high three aces to go with three digs and a block, while Hanneman contributed with a pair of kills, five digs and a service ace. Junior outside hitter Kate White (Plymouth, MA) spiked eight kills and owned a .294 hitting mark in addition to two aces and a block. Junior libero Megan MacAuley (Upland, CA) anchored the defense with a game-high 14 digs on top of two kills in two attempts.
Freshman Melissa Griffin (Byfield, MA) and junior Kelsey Armstrong-Hahn (Corvallis, OR) each smacked five kills to lead Suffolk, while each got down for four digs. Sophomore setter Julie Sullivan (Haverhill, MA) directed the offense with 18 assists in addition to three digs.
UMass Boston will be in action again when they host Simmons College on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Rams travel to Worcester, MA on September 9 to take on Becker College at 7:00 p.m.
