BOSTON, MA - Junior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) matched her season-high with 15 kills and owned a .500 hitting percentage to fuel a team hitting mark of .400 to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team over visiting Simmons College tonight, 25-13, 25-10, 25-13, at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons even their record at 3-3, while the Sharks fall to 1-2.
McWhorter made just two attack errors on the night and has committed just three attack errors in her last two matches to hit a combined .542 in that span. She added two aces, three digs and two blocks to her night. Freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) directed the offense with 28 assists to go with a pair of aces, a kill and two digs, while sophomore right side Nina Sullivan (Cheshire, CT) hit .462 on the night with seven kills and just one attack error in addition to one block. Freshman middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) turned in a stellar effort with a season-high six kills and an eye-popping .750 hitting percentage in addition to three digs and three blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Kate Fionte (Andover, MA) led Simmons with four kills and a .267 hitting percentage to go with three digs, while junior outside hitter Candyce Arena (Brookline, MA) swung for four kills, got down for a match-high 10 digs and fired an ace.
UMass Boston will be in action again when they travel to Plymouth, NH on Friday, September 12 to take on Mount Ida College at 6:00 p.m. in the Days Inn of Campton Tournament, while the Sharks take on Maine Maritime Academy in a match played at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA on September 13 at 11:00 a.m.
