BOSTON, MA - Freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) spiked for 10 kills and owned a .500 hitting mark to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team over host Wentworth Institute of Technology, 25-14, 25-9, 25-9, tonight at Tansey Gymnasium on the campus of Wentworth in Boston, MA. The Beacons win their ninth straight match to improve to 9-2 for their best start since 1999, when they won 10 of their first 11 matches. The Leopards fall to 2-8 on the year.

UMass Boston jumped out to first set leads of 8-2 and 15-5, before taking a 25-14 decision. The Beacons were knotted at 5-5 and later held an 11-7 margin in the second set, before they rattled off 10 straight points during the serve of senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) to take a 21-7 advantage. UMass Boston won the set 25-9 and owned a 14-8 lead in the third set before going on another run with nine straight points, during freshman setter Frana Burtness-Adams' (Fairbanks, AK) serve, to take a 23-8 lead. The Beacons won the third stanza by a score of 25-9 as well.

Thompson added a pair of aces, four digs and two total blocks to her evening for UMass Boston, while senior outside hitter Kate White (Plymouth, MA) smashed nine kills on a .400 hitting percentage to go with three digs and a block assist. McWhorter's streak of at least 10 kills in a match came to an end at 18 straight, dating back to October 25 of last year with a total of seven tonight. She was efficient with an impressive .538 hitting mark and added seven digs and two aces. Sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) registered 16 assists in two sets to go with two kills in three attempts, a block solo and a season-high three aces. Adams made the most of her time in the third set as the setter with nine assists and a season-high five aces and freshman libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) got down for a team-high 10 digs, while firing three aces.

The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, September 22 when they host Worcester State College at the Clark Athletic Center at 6:00 p.m. in their home opener, while Wentworth travels to Paxton, MA to take on Anna Maria College on September 19 at noon.
