CAMBRIDGE, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team was defeated by Smith College, 19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13, and by host MIT, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20, today in a non-conference tri-match played in Cambridge, MA on the campus of MIT. The Beacons are now 7-6 on the season, while Smith improves to 3-6 and MIT to 8-5.
UMass Boston won the first two sets vs. Smith, before falling in the final three. Freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) set the tone for the offense with a season-high 43 assists to go with seven digs and a pair of blocks, while junior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) put down a career-high 24 kills and hit .400 for the match in addition to a season-high 15 digs, an ace and a block assist. Junior outside hitter Kate White (Plymouth, MA) contributed with a season-best 17 kills and added nine digs and an ace, while junior libero Megan MacAuley (Upland, CA) scooped up a career-high 29 digs to anchor the defense. Sophomore right side Nina Sullivan (Cheshire, CT) chipped in with eight kills, an ace and three digs.
McWhorter shined vs. MIT as well with 16 kills and a .300 hitting percentage and added 15 digs, a block and a service ace. Hanneman posted 29 assists, matched her season-high with four aces and got down for four digs, while MacAuley enjoyed another outstanding defensive effort with 26 digs.
The Beacons will be in action again on Wednesday, September 24 when they travel to Worcester, MA to take on Worcester State College at 6:00 p.m.
