WORCESTER, MA - Junior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) hit a torrid .667 with 11 kills and made just one attack error, while freshman middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) hit .615 and spiked for a season-high eight kills to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team over host Worcester State College tonight, 25-11, 25-12, 25-8, in Worcester, MA. The Beacons improve to 8-6 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 7-5.
McWhorter and Rattigan were a big reason for UMass Boston's team hitting mark of .397 for the night. McWhorter made just one attack error on the night and added an ace and three digs, while Rattigan was error-free and fired a pair of aces to go with a pair of blocks. Freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) set up the offense with 26 assists in addition to a team-high three aces, four digs and four kills on a .571 hitting percentage. Junior libero Megan MacAuley (Upland, CA) led the defense with 11 digs and chipped in with two aces.
Worcester State was led by sophomore Michelle Maass (Halifax, MA), who registered 15 digs while freshman Brittany Stoddard (Orange, MA) dished out 15 assists. Junior Lauren Saylor (Swansea, MA) led WSC with five kills.
Both teams will host conference tri-matches on Saturday, September 27. The Lancers will start play with Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 11:00 a.m. and finish with MCLA at 3:00 p.m. while the Beacons will open with Eastern Connecticut State University at noon and cap off their day with Keene State College at 4:00 p.m. in a pair of Little East Conference matches.
