MEDFORD, MA - The Tufts University women's volleyball team handed University of Massachusetts Boston its first loss in its last 14 matches, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, tonight at the Cousens Complex in Medford, MA. The loss snaps the Beacons' school-record winning streak at 13 as they fall to 13-3 on the season. The Jumbos, who are ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Association Poll, run their winning streak to 12 straight matches and avenge their only loss of the season, which came at the hands of UMass Boston, which is ranked first in the same poll, on September 11. The Beacons' school-record streak of 24 straight sets without a loss also came to an end in the opening set.
UMass Boston faced a 7-3 deficit early in the first set, but fought back to a 16-16 tie, before Tufts pulled out the set. The Beacons found themselves trailing 12-9 in the second set, but they reeled off eight unanswered points during the service of freshman Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK), who fired an ace during the run. UMass Boston maintained a 22-15 advantage, before the Jumbos pulled to within 23-19, but the Beacons held on for the second set win. UMass Boston trailed 12-8 in the third set, before tying the set at 20-20 and then reeling off three straight points for a 23-20 margin, but Tufts later cut the deficit to 24-23, before the Beacons took the set and a 2-1 match lead. UMass Boston tied the fourth set at 7-7, but it would be as close as it would get as the Jumbos led the rest of the set to send the match to a deciding fifth set. The Beacons owned an 8-6 margin, but Tufts pulled even at 9-9, before UMB sophomore middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) put down two consecutive kills for an 11-9 lead, but the Jumbos closed out the match with six of the next seven points for the win.
Senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) posted a double-double of 22 kills and 15 digs to go with a pair of aces and a solo block for UMass Boston, while freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) served up three aces, while spiking for 15 kills on a .306 hitting mark and also got down for double digit digs with a career-high of 18 to go with a season high of seven total blocks, including two solos. Sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) matched her career high with 50 assists and added nine digs, an ace, two blocks and a pair of kills. Freshman libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) scooped up 17 digs and added an ace on the night, while Rattigan finished with seven kills and a .368 hitting mark.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, October 6 when they travel to Beverly, MA to take on Endicott College at 6:00 p.m., while Tufts hosts Union College in the Tufts Invitational on October 2 at 5:00 p.m.
