BOSTON, MA - Senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) averaged 3.50 kills and hit .407 on the day to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team to three victories at the 2009 Beacon Invitational today at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston in Boston, MA.
The Beacons, who are currently ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Association Poll defeated Wheaton College, 25-13, 25-21, 25-18, and followed that win with a 25-3, 25-4, 25-10 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy, before beating Babson College, 25-14, 25-11, 25-18, to improve to 17-4 on the season. Wheaton came back to defeat Babson, 23-25, 17-25, 33-31, 26-24, 15-11, and took down Massachusetts Maritime, 25-5, 25-14, 25-11, to improve to 12-10, while Babson was victorious over Massachusetts Maritime, 25-10, 25-5, 25-6, to stand at 10-8 on the year, while Mass Maritime falls to 0-17.
McWhorter smashed 16 kills on a .419 hitting mark to go with a pair of aces, four digs and four block assists vs. Wheaton. The Lyons were within 14-12 in the first set, but UMass Boston scored 11 of the final 12 points to close out the set. Wheaton owned a 20-19 edge in set number two, but UMass Boston scored four straight points on McWhorter's serve and took the set. The Beacons held a 13-12 margin in the final set, before pulling away on a 7-2 run to take a 20-14 lead, en-route to taking the set. Freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) contributed with eight kills, four aces, seven digs and a block solo, while sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) put up 22 assists and added five digs and an ace for UMass Boston. Freshman libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) led the defense with 11 digs and fired an ace and junior defensive specialist Michelle Cawley (Canton, MA) scooped up eight digs and served up a pair of aces. Sophomore outside hitter Miranda Howitt (San Francisco, CA) led the Lyons with 11 kills and added eight digs, while senior middle hitter Lauren Kraus (Westboro, MA) spiked for seven kills, including the 1,000th of her career, and added an ace and a dig. Junior setter Becca Rose (Sudbury, MA) directed the offense with 21 assists to go with five digs and sophomore defensive specialist Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, CA) led the defense with 10 digs.
Thompson was perfect for the Beacons on five attacks with five kills vs. Massachusetts Maritime and added an ace, while freshman middle hitter Alexa Sullivan (South Dennis, MA) also put down five kills on a .500 hitting mark to go with an ace, a dig and a block solo. Freshman outside hitter Melissa Brown (Gardnerville, NV/Silver Lake Regional (MA) HS) spiked for a pair of kills in three attempts and fired a career-high four aces, while freshman setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) set for 12 assists to go with three aces and a pair of digs. Senior defensive specialist Jennifer Wong (Fremont, CA) led the defense with a career-high six digs. Junior outside hitter Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, MA) led the Buccaneers with a kill and three digs, while sophomore middle hitter Samantha Foley (Forestdale, MA) chipped in with a block solo and two digs.
Babson was within 8-5 in the first set, before UMass Boston reeled off five straight points on Sullivan's serve and went on to win the set. The Beacons trailed the third set, 6-4, but strung together five straight points on Cawley's serve for a 9-6 lead. The Beavers climbed to within 15-14, but Thompson fired three aces during a 6-0 run to take a 21-14 UMB lead, before taking the set. McWhorter put down nine kills on a .474 hitting pace and added six digs and an ace, while Sullivan registered a torrid .778 hitting percentage with seven kills in addition to three digs and a pair of aces. Thompson finished with a personal-best five aces, six kills, seven digs and three total blocks and Burtness-Adams recorded 14 assists, three kills and a block solo. Babson was led by senior middle hitter Caitlin O'Neill (Lynnfield, MA) and sophomore outside hitter Alexa Untermann (Honolulu, HI) with five kills each. Freshman setter Kathleen Lynch (Quincy, MA) posted a match-high 17 assists, while senior libero Shanna Glassner (Orland Park, IL) got down for a match-best nine digs and added two aces.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, October 13 when it hosts Framingham State College at 6:00 p.m., while Wheaton hosts Mount Holyoke on the same night at 7:00 p.m. Babson will travel to Springfield, MA to play Springfield College on October 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Massachusetts Maritime Academy next plays at Salem State College on October 12 at 1:00 p.m.
