CAMBRIDGE, MA - The University of Massachusetts volleyball team won both its matches in day two of the MIT Invitational by defeating host MIT, 3-1, and Bates College, 3-0, this afternoon at the Rockwell Cage in Cambridge, MA. The Beacons finished in a three-way tie for first in the Invitational with MIT and Lebanon Valley but the crown ended up going to the hosts after a sets won/lost tiebreaker. The Beacons, who are ranked No. 25 in the latest AVCA national poll, improve to 20-2 on the season while the loss drops the Engineers to 17-7 and Bates to 6-14 overall.
Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) and freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) led the way for the Beacons, each averaging over 3.0 kills per set on the day. Over the two matches, Thompson collected 27 kills to go along with 25 digs while Porter chipped in with 24 kills and 20 digs in the two wins.
Junior setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) dished out a combined 36 assists to go along with four aces while sophomore setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) contributed with 29 assists and three aces in the victories.
The Beacons will be back in action on Tuesday night when they play host to LEC foe Western Connecticut State University in a 6:00 p.m. match up.
