BRISTOL, R.I.- The visiting UMass-Boston Beacons women's volleyball team (17-7) rallied from behind in each set to defeat host Roger Williams (16-10), Thursday, 25-23, 33-31, 25-22.

After falling behind early in the first set, 12-7, RWU posted a 9-2 run to force the Beacons into a timeout, down 16-14. RWU held its lead up to 23-20 before senior Alessandra Adamo (Glastonbury, Conn.) served out the game to put UMass-Boston ahead, 1-0.

After dropping the first point of the second set, the Hawks never trailed again until late, building its lead to 20-15. Serving with the 24-21 lead, RWU failed to score again until down, 25-24. A back-and-forth battle ensued with seven set-points being played before the Beacon's finally prevailed, 33-31.

RWU took the lead early in the first set and led 15-11 midway through. The Hawks lead diminished to 20-19 when the Beacons sided-out and junior Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) ran off four-straight service points leading to the eventual win.

UMass Boston was led by McWhorter with 23 kills on a .312 hitting percentage, while adding two aces, 14 digs and a block assist, while freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) set for a career-high 36 assists in a three-set match to go with 11 digs and an ace.  Junior outside hitter Megan MacAuley (Upland, CA) got down for 28 digs to anchor the defense, while freshman defensive specialist Maria Della Croce (Quincy, MA) scooped up 15 and Adamo registered 10 in addition to a pair of aces.


RWU was led by junior Erica DoVale (Hope, R.I.), who posted a double-double with a team-high 13 kills along with 10 digs. Sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) recorded 15 digs to lead the Hawks while senior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) notched 27 assists.

RWU remains at home for its next match, Saturday, hosting the Rhode Island Championship Tournament. The Hawks face Rhode Island College at 10 a.m., Johnson & Wales at 12 p.m. and Salve Regina at 2 p.m. UMass-Boston moves on to play at Eastern Nazarene College, Saturday, at 11 a.m.
