BRISTOL, RI - The University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team defeated Roger Williams University, 3-0, tonight on the road, handing the Hawks their first loss at home in 12 matches this season. The Beacons, who received 19 votes in the most recent Division III American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, win their fourth straight match to improve to 22-2 overall for their best start in school history, while the Hawks fall 24-5 on the campaign.
In a back and forth first set, the Beacons were able to hang on for the 25-23 victory to jump ahead to the 1-0 lead in the match, despite hitting -.056 in the set. UMass Boston cruised in the second set, earning a 25-15 victory with the help of 13 Roger Williams hitting errors in the frame. In the third set, the Hawks looked poised to avoid the sweep and had the Beacons at set-point on two occasions (24-23, 25-24), but UMass Boston gutted out a 28-26 victory for the 3-0 win.
Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) led the offensive effort registering 10 kills, eight digs and three solo blocks. Freshman libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) played well on the defensive front, collecting 13 digs on the night to go along with two assists and an ace. Freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) chipped in with 12 digs, five kills and a match-high three aces.
Sophomore setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) led the Beacons with 13 assists to go along with six digs and an ace while junior setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) dished out 10 assists, registered seven digs and picked up an ace in the win.
For the Hawks, senior middle hitter Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, CT) recorded a match-high 13 kills while swinging at an impressive .476 clip from the floor. Senior libero Jill Hurd (Sunapee, NH) was active all night, notching a game-high 18 digs while sophomore setter Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, CT) ran the Roger Williams offense, registering a match-high 24 assists.
The Beacons are idle until Tuesday, October 26, 2010 when they head to Plymouth, MA for a rematch of last year's LEC Championship game against Plymouth State University in a 6:00 p.m. match up while Roger Williams is back in action on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 when they host the University of New England in a 6:00 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference tilt.
