BOSTON, MA - Senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) smashed 20 kills on a .486 hitting percentage and sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) set for 38 assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team over visiting Roger Williams University, 25-22, 25-19, 28-26, tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston in Boston, MA.
The Beacons, who are currently ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Poll, win their ninth straight contest and have won 22 of their last 24 matches to improve to 22-4 to match the best mark in school history after 26 matches. The Hawks fall to 16-10 on the year.
Roger Williams owned a 17-16 lead in the opening set, but UMass Boston rallied for six straight points on junior defensive specialist Michelle Cawley's (Canton, MA) serve to take a 23-17 lead. The Hawks closed to within 23-21 on the service of senior defensive specialist Michelle Beatrice (Medfield, MA), but the Beacons held on for the first set win. UMass Boston held a 16-14 margin in the second set, before going on a 5-1 run to take a 21-15 lead and later capture the set. The third set was very tight throughout with Roger Williams taking its largest lead at 18-14, but the Beacons came back to tie the frame at 19-19. The Hawks took a 21-19 margin, but UMass Boston scored the next three points on the serve of freshman setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) for a 22-21 edge. Roger Williams came back and later served for the match at 25-24, but the Beacons held tough and went on to take a 26-25 edge, but could not close out match. UMass Boston held off the Hawks for the 28-26 set win to remain a perfect 8-0 at home and win its 24th straight set at home.
McWhorter added 10 digs for her 12th double-double of kills and digs for the season for the Beacons, while Hanneman also got down for 10 digs in addition to a pair of total blocks and a kill. Freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) spiked for 10 kills and scooped up 13 digs for her eighth double-double and also added three aces and two total blocks, while freshman libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) picked up a team-high 16 digs to anchor the defense.
Sophomore outside hitter Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, MA) led Roger Williams with nine kills and a .391 hitting mark to go with three digs and a block assist, while junior middle hitter Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, CT) put down six kills and added two block assists, an ace and a dig. Freshman setter Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, CT) directed the offense with 22 assists and scooped up eight digs, while junior libero Jill Hurd (Sunapee, NH) registered a match-high 18 digs to go with a pair of kills and two aces.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 24 when it hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 12:00 p.m. and Plymouth State University at 4:00 p.m. in a Little East Conference tri-match at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Hawks come back to Boston on October 28 to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
