BOSTON, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches this afternoon in day two of the Judges Classic hosted by Brandeis University at Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, MA. The Beacons dropped their first match in a heartbreaking 3-2, five set thriller vs. Clarkson before falling 3-0 to Tufts University in their regular season finale. The losses drop the Beacons to 25-4 on the year while the victories put Clarkson at 24-8 and Tufts at 20-9. UMass Boston, who received 30 votes in the most recent Division III American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, snaps its seven match winning streak to complete the 2010 regular season.
Against Clarkson, the Beacons came out strong picking up a 25-18 first set win. The visitors evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 win before UMass Boston dominated the third set, 25-16 to take the 2-1 edge in the match. Clarkson battled to even the score at 2-2 with a 25-20 fourth set victory and kept the momentum in the final set with a 15-13 win to earn the 3-2 victory on the match.
Sophomore and junior middle hitters Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) and Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) paced the Beacons with 15 and 14 kills each, respectively while freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) chipped in with 12 kills and a team-high 12 digs.
Versus Tufts, UMass Boston looked fatigued from their first match and it showed in their play. The Beacons were swept in straight sets (25-16, 25-11, 25-22) for the first time by an opponent since October 6, 2009 when they fell to Endicott College, 3-0. Thompson led the way with nine kills, 13 digs, and two total blocks.
The Beacons will be in action next week on Friday, November 5 when they host both matches of the Little East Conference tournament quarterfinals. Game times and opponents will be determined based on winners of the semifinals match ups taking place on Tuesday, November 2.
