NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball player Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) has been named the Little East Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of August 30 to September 5, it was announced today by the conference. The award marks the second time that she has earned the honor for her career. She also picked up the weekly top defensive player award for the week of September 21-27, 2009.
The sophomore anchored the Beacons' defensive effort with 5.71 digs per game and chipped in with a pair of aces as well. The 5'8" libero racked up 80 digs in 14 sets over four matches and got down for at least 17 digs in every contest. Rossoll came up with 23 digs on September 3 in UMass Boston's 3-2 win over Hardin-Simmons University in the first round of the River City Classic in San Antonio, TX. A graduate of Thomas B. Doherty High School, the defensive stalwart scooped up 17 digs and added an ace in the Beacons' 3-0 victory over Whitworth University and was a stopper vs. nationally-ranked number 12 Trinity University (TX) with 23 digs to help UMass Boston to a 3-0 upset triumph on September 4. She closed out the weekend with 17 digs and an ace in a 3-0 win over McMurray University to contribute to the Beacons' 4-0 start for the best season-opening stretch in school history.
Rossoll ranks second among LEC leaders with 5.71 digs per set and has already established herself as one of the premier defensive players in school history with 540 digs to rank ninth on the school's career dig list in 135 sets over 39 career matches.
The Beacons, who just missed cracking the top 25 in the latest AVCA National Poll with a program-record 29 votes, will be in action again on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Emerson College at 6:00 p.m. in their home opener at the Clark Athletic Center.
