NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball player Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) has been named the Little East Conference Volleyball Co-Offensive Player of the Week, along with Western Connecticut State University's Sammie Hathaway, for her play during the week of August 30 to September 5, it was announced today by the conference.

Thompson picked up where she left off from the 2009 campaign that saw her selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association New England Freshman of the Year as well as an All-American Honorable Mention, with an outstanding start to the season. The sophomore led the Beacons to their best start in school history with a 4-0 mark behind a team-high 4.57 kills per game to go with a .314 hitting percentage, 0.50 service aces, 3.57 digs and 0.86 total blocks per game in 14 sets. The middle hitter opened the season with 22 kills and an ace, while matching career-highs with 21 digs and seven total blocks in a 3-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons University in the opening round of the River City Classic in San Antonio, TX on September 3. She upped her game just hours later vs. Whitworth University with a scorching .625 hitting mark on 17 kills, while committing just two attack errors to go with 11 digs, a pair of total blocks and an ace in the 3-0 win. The 6'2" hitter stood tall in UMass Boston's stunning 3-0 upset victory over number 12 nationally-ranked Trinity University (TX) on September 4 with her third straight double-double on 11 kills and 10 digs, while adding three block solos and four aces, including three aces during a 6-0 run to overcome a four-point deficit to earn the straight set triumph over Trinity. Thompson closed out the tournament with 14 kills and just one attack miscue for a .406 hitting percentage in addition to eight digs and an ace in a 3-0 victory over McMurray University to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

Thompson currently leads the LEC with 4.57 kills per set, while ranking sixth with a .314 hitting mark.

A Moorpark High School product, Thompson has already established herself as an outstanding player in UMB volleyball annals, earning LEC Rookie of the Year honors a year ago as well as First Team All-Conference accolades to go with All-Region selections from the AVCA and the New England Women's Volleyball Association. She currently ranks 10th in school history with 484 career kills, while placing second with a lifetime hitting mark of .335, ninth with 52 block assists and 10th with 94 career aces.

The Beacons, who just missed cracking the top 25 in the latest AVCA National Poll with a program-record 29 votes, will be in action again on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Emerson College at 6:00 p.m. in their home opener at the Clark Athletic Center.
