Volleyball Ranked 22nd on National Coaches Poll

Sept. 7, 2011

LEXINGTON, Kentucky – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has released their first regular-season national coaches’ poll for 2011.  Volleyball dropped three spots on this week’s poll, after being ranked 19th on the AVCA preseason poll, which was released in August.

The Beacons (0-2) opened their 2011 campaign last weekend against one of the top Division II programs on the west coast in the University of Hawaii Hilo.  Looking to pick-up the upset, the Beacons played extremely hard against some great competition but were defeated by the Beacons by the final scores of 3-0 and 3-1.

In the two matches, junior All-American Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) recorded a team-best 26 kills respectively.  Setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO/Arapahoe) averaged nearly 9.5 assists per set, and also led the defense with 22 digs.  Newcomer Kayla Wilson (San Jose, CA/Presentation) made her presence felt immediately as she came-up with 21 digs in the two matches.

Volleyball returns to action this Friday when they take part in the Endicott College Invitational.  The Beacons are scheduled to face Bowdoin College at 3 p.m. and Schreiner University at 7 p.m.
