PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team recorded their eight consecutive victory and second straight conference win as they defeated Rhode Island College by the final score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at the Murray Center.
Saturday’s win was the eighth consecutive win for the 18th ranked Beacons (8-2, 2-0 LEC) over Rhode Island College (4-7, 0-2 LEC) dating back to September 7, 2007. It also represented the fifth straight time that the Beacons defeated the Anchorwomen in three straight sets.
Junior Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) and senior Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) combined for 23 kills on 37 attempts respectively to lead the Beacons offense. With Saturday’s 13 kills, Thompson continues to move the all-time record list. To date Thompson currently has 1,062 kills in her career, which ranks her second in the program’s history behind Kate White ’09, who ended her career with 1,191 career kills.
Setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) had another consistent afternoon as she tallied 25 set assists. Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) and Kayla Wilson (San Jose, CA) each recorded three of the Beacons nine aces. UMass surrendered just one service error and two receiving errors the entire match. They also combined for a .360 attack percentage.
On the defensive side of the net it was Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) and Wilson who each recorded eight digs to lead the Beacons. Hanneman and Brooke Nemethy (Oviedo, FL) finished second on the team with five digs each.
Thompson was solid at the net as she posted one solo block and two block-assists. Rattigan and Nemethy were just as impressive as the two posted a combined four block-assists respectively.
Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Tufts University for a 7 p.m. non-conference match. The Jumbos are currently ranked seventh in New England, while the Beacons are currently the top team in the region.
