NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball player Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) has been named Little East Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of September 21-27, it was announced today.
The freshman led the Beacons' defense with 46 digs in 12 sets over four matches to average 3.83 digs per set. She also committed just one reception error in two of those matches for the week. Rossoll scooped up seven digs in three sets vs. Worcester State College on September 22 and got down for eight more digs on September 24 vs. Johnson & Wales University. The libero really stepped up in a pair of conference matches on September 26 with 14 digs in three sets at Eastern Connecticut State University and came up with 17 digs vs. Keene State College.
The Thomas B. Doherty High School product is UMass Boston's starting libero and one of just four players on the team to see action in all 53 sets of 15 matches. She currently ranks fifth among Little East Conference leaders with 3.96 digs per set and has registered double-digit dig totals in all but three matches. She picked up a season-high 25 digs on September 5 vs. Chapman University and added 21 more on the same day vs. Occidental College in the Pacific Coast Classic. Rossoll has been the Beacons' dig leader on 12 occasions this season and has been an asset on the offensive side of the net as well with 0.34 aces per set to rank third on the squad. The rookie has served up at least one ace in nine matches, including six outings with multiple aces.
UMass Boston has won a school-record 13 straight matches and is currently 13-2 on the season, including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play. The squad has received votes in the past two American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Weekly Polls with nine and seven votes, respectively. The Beacons are also currently ranked number one in the NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Association Poll for the third straight week and will be in action again on Tuesday, September 29 when they travel to Medford, MA to take on Tufts University at 7:00 p.m.
