BOSTON, Mass. – With a strong effort on both sides of the net, the 17th ranked Beacons (16-2) notched their fourth straight 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-11) decision as they defeated RIT (10-13) as part of the 2011 Beacons Invitational Friday evening in the Clark Athletic Center.
Friday’s meeting was only the second-time that the two teams have shared the same hardwood. In their first meeting it was the Tigers that earned the 3-0 decision.
For UMass Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) and Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) fueled the Beacons offense with a combined 26 kills respectively. Setter Cassy Hanneman totaled 38 assists on 70 attempts (.543) and also had a pair of aces as well.
Hanneman, Porter, and Kayla Wilson (San Jose, CA) each recorded 10 digs in the win. Thompson and Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) both had one solo block, while Molly Rattigan (Dartmouth, MA) came-up with a pair of block-assists.
For the Tigers, Kyra Wilson-Houck totaled a team-high seven kills on 20 attempts (.350). Rebecca Moore tallied six kills for RIT. Bethany Davis totaled 12 digs in the match, and Christina Worth had nine assists.
Volleyball returns to action tomorrow when they take on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Start time of that match has been changed to 3 p.m. RIT will face Western Connecticut State University at 1:30 p.m. and the final match of the day, between Coast Guard and Western Connecticut has been moved to a 5:30 p.m. start.
