#14 Wheaton College Shuts Down Baseball's Bats in 2-1 Loss

NORTON, Mass.—Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, R.I.) allowed just one earned run over eight innings, but UMass Boston's (15-19) bats couldn't get anything going Tuesday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to #14 Wheaton College (28-10) at Sidell Stadium.

Ilges scattered seven hits and gave up just two runs (one earned) in his second consecutive complete game. The reigning Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week struck out seven, walked one, and recovered from a slow first inning to limit the national-runner ups to their fewest runs in 10 games.

Battery mate Todd Ezold (Westfield, Mass.) led the UMB offense with a team-high two hits and the Beacons lone RBI of the day in UMass Boston's final non-conference game of the year.

Matt Consiglio (Soutbury, Conn.), Nick Radcliffe (Randolph, Mass.), Gerard Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Kurtis White (Nahant, Mass.) accounted for the rest of the UMB's six hits. Pinch-runner Kyle Thebado (Marlborough, Mass.) scored the Beacons only run, coming in to score from second on an Ezold single in the eighth inning.

Junior Nick Filloramo picked up his fifth victory of the season by scattering three hits and no walks over five innings. Senior Corey Laliberte led three Lyons relievers in holding the Beacons to three hits over the final four innings on Wheaton's Senior Day.

Wheaton grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind two hits and a Beacons error.

Matt Lavanchy and Eric Jensen led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Grant. With runners at second and third and one out, first baseman Apolinar De La Cruz sent a groundball to shortstop, that Bryan Failla (Torrington, Conn.) fielded cleanly but overthrew to first base to allow both runners to score. Ilges would induce a double-play ball to end the inning, but the damage had been done.

The Beacons put runners on first and third with one out in the fifth inning, but the Lyons turned a double play to keep UMB off the board.

After going down 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings, Ezold and the Beacons scratched a run across in the eighth.

White came on as a pinch-runner to lead off the inning and singled to the opposite field, before being pinch-run for by Thebado. Faila walked to put two runners on with no outs, before Eric Dumas retired each of the next two batters. With two down and runners on first and second, Ezold cracked a single to right-center that plated Thebado from second and sent Faila all the way to third base. Wheaton managed to get out of the inning though, as Dumas forced Consiglio to ground out to third base.

Radcliffe singled through the right side to lead off the ninth and reached second base on a sacrifice bunt, only to be left at second, after back-to-back groundouts to end the contest.

UMass Boston will close out the regular season Friday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium when they host Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference doubleheader. Friday's contests begin at Noon and will also serve as the Beacons Senior Day.
