No. 5/5 Baseball Picked To Repeat On Little East Preseason Poll

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – UMass Boston has been picked to repeat as Little East Conference Tournament champions after being picked first on the 2018 LEC Preseason Coaches Poll.  The Beacons earned five first place votes and 47 points.

The preseason ranking marks the first-time in program history that the Beacons were picked as the top team in back-to-back years.  Last season, the Beacons earned 55 points and a program record six first place votes.  The only other time, UMB was selected first on the preseason poll was in 2011 when they earned six first place votes and a program best 61 points.

Currently ranked fifth in the country on and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Polls, the Beacons proved to be the top team in New England in 2017. New England Region Coach of the Year Brendan Eygabroat, led UMB to their second Little East Tournament and NCAA Regional Tournament championships.  He would then lead the Beacons to their first College World Series win, when they defeated Wheaton College (MA) on the second day of the national championship.

This season, the Beacons will welcome back a veteran core of players including preseason All-American Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.).  Last season, Fowler crushed the ball all over the diamond to lead the Beacons in RBI with 48, home runs with seven, and triples with four.  He also boasted a .600 slugging percentage and finished third on the team with a .367 average.

Amongst the Beacons key returners will be Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.), Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.), Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.), Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.), and Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.).

On the hill, UMB will look to lefty starter JT Morin (Wilton, Conn.) to make an immediate impact after being sidelined last season.  Out of the bullpen, Bryan Kaufman (Farmingdale, N.Y.) emerged as the top closer in New England.  He finished out his junior campaign with a 1.03 ERA and had a total of 43 strikeouts in 61.1 innings of work.  He posted a 3-0 record and five saves in 24 appearances.

The Beacons should look to Fernando Burgos (Hyde Park, Mass.), Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.), Alex Carusotto (Pittsfield, Mass.), Chris Munro (Marshfield, Mass.), and Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) to play a major part in the Beacons rotation, and bullpen.
