MARSHFIELD, Mass.—After playing huge roles in #9/9 UMass Boston men's hockey's weekend, conference sweep, senior Garrison Sanipass (Northbrook, Ill.) and freshman Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) were named the New England Hockey Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Sanipass and Nitkin teamed up with linemate Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.) to record seven of the Beacons' 10 goals over the weekend.
Sanipass finished with two goals, two assists and the game-winning goal in Friday night's win over #12/12 Hobart College. He opened the weekend, by scoring the go-ahead goal and the game-winning goal in the Beacons' 4-2 win over defending NEHC Tournament Champions Hobart College. On Saturday, he added a pairs of assists, to help the Beacons defeat Skidmore College 6-3.
Sanipass finished +7 on the weekend, including tying for the team-high on Friday (+2) and Saturday (+5).
Nitkin earns his first career weekly honors, after scoring a team-high four goals over the weekend.
On Friday night, Nitkin outraced Hobart All-American defenseman Tanner Shaw to the puck and potted an empty-net goal to close out the Statesmen 4-2. He made a huge mark on Saturday's game, as he recorded a goal in all three periods, for his first collegiate hat trick. Nitkin finished Saturday's game tied for the team-high with a +5 rating.
UMass Boston will close out their semester this week, when they travel to Curry College on Friday at 6:50 p.m. and host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 4 p.m. Saturday will also serve as the Beacons Alumni Day, with the team hosting two alumni games on Saturday morning.
