LAKELAND, Fla. – A 12 goal third quarter blew open what was a tight contest as Division II Florida Southern College defeated men's lacrosse by the final of 22-7 Tuesday afternoon at Bryant Stadium.
In the first-ever meeting between the two program's UMass Boston went back-and-forth with FSC through the first 30 minutes of play and went into the halftime break trialing by three.
Unfortunately after the break the host Mocs would outscore the Beacons 15-3 to earn the victory. UMass Boston saw John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.), Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.), and Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) score the Beacons first four goals. In the second half it was Powers, Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.), and Tommy Petitti (Quincy, Mass.) each finding the back of the cage once.
Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) played a majority of the minutes in Tuesday's loss and made a combined eight saves. Delpha and Powers both finished with a pair of goals, while Powers recorded a team-best four points as he finished with two assists as well.
Combined the Beacons recorded 25 groundballs and forced Florida Southern to turn the ball over 21 times. They also finished 20-for-24 on clear attempts, while the Mocs went a perfect 19-for-19.
Andrew Guy (Northbridge, Mass.) led the Beacons defense with four caused turnovers and collected a total of six groundballs.
