Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Trailing 7-2 with 9:26 remaining in the first half, the Wentworth Institute of Technology lacrosse team kept University Massachusetts Boston off the scoreboard for the next 38:28, scoring 11 straight goals in the process, en route to a 13-10 win in a non-conference contest at Sweeney Field.

After the Leopards scored first on a senior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, MA) goal 1:39 into the game, the Beacons scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 7:13 left in the first quarter. Sophomore attackman John Canty (Milton, MA), senior attackman Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA), and junior midfielder Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) each scored a goal and an assist during the spurt. Junior attackman Chris Guilherme (Derry, NH) scored to pull the Leopards to within 3-2 before Kovach gave UMass Boston a 4-2 lead after one with a goal with 11 seconds left.

The Beacons scored three goals in a span of 2:55, with junior midfielder Al Craven (Milton, MA) tallying a goal and an assist, to increase the lead to 7-2. From there, Wentworth would score the last four goals of the half, thanks to sophomore attackman Matt Cox (Granger, IN), who scored twice, Wesche (one goal, one assist), and senior midfielder Thomas Zygmant (Southport, CT), who had two assists. Wesche's marker came with 44 ticks left in the half and made it a 7-6 game.

Just 29 seconds into the second half Cox would feed Guilherme to tie the game for the first time since it was knotted at 1-all. Freshman Bill Berringer (Marblehead, MA) scored an unassisted tally with 12:06 left that would give Wentworth the lead for good. A man-up goal by Wesche with 10:36 left in the quarter made it a 9-7 game after 45:00 of play.

The Leopards scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 13-7, with Cox (two goals, one assist) leading the way. Kovach, Canty, and senior midfielder Tim Boyle (Dorchester, MA) would score three late goals in a 45-second span for the Beacons.

Cox finished with four goals and three assists for a seven-point night. Guilherme and Wesche each scored three goals and had an assist, while Zygman finished with three assists. Junior Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, MD) made six saves in 52:55 of action. Wesche also collected a game-high 10 ground balls and won seven of 11 faceoffs.

Kovach finished the night with three goals and three assists, while Canty (two goals) and Nunn (two goals, one assist) paces the Beacon offense. Freshman Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) made 12 saves. Canty picked up eight ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Roman Ricci (Duxbury, MA) was 6-for-9 on faceoffs.

The Leopards outshot the Beacons by a 45-30 margin and won the ground ball battle, 57-45. Wentworth was 4-for-11 on extra man opportunities.

Winners of two in a row, Wentworth improves to 5-3 and is idle until Tuesday when it hosts the University of New England at 7:00 p.m. UMass Boston dropped its third straight to fall to 1-6 on the season. The Beacons are back in action Saturday, hosting Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University at 1:00 p.m.
