PAWTUCKET, R.I.—For the first time in program history, UMass Boston men's tennis has been selected as the Little East Conference Preseason Favorite, the league office announced Friday morning.
The Beacons earned five of seven first-place votes to be picked first in the LEC Coaches' Preseason Poll. UMass Boston accumulated 35 total points in the first Men's Tennis Preseason Poll since 2015.
UMass Boston won their second LEC Regular Season Title in 2017 by going a perfect 6-0 in conference play and went on to win the program's third-ever LEC Tournament Title.
LEC Tournament runner-up UMass Dartmouth was picked second with 26 points, while Salem State University earned two first-place votes and 24 total points to take home third place.
Rhode Island College (20 points), Western Connecticut State University (20 points), Bridgewater State University (15 points) and the University of Southern Maine (six points) rounded out the seven-team poll.
Head coach Eric Berg returns seven players from last year's NCAA Tournament team, including six players who were part of the 2016-17 lineup.
Senior captain Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) is back at the top of the Beacons lineup, after earning First Team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles.
Singles specialist Sanshrut Sharma (Mumbai, India) carved out a spot on the Second Team for singles and Josh Bhasin (Tulsa, Okla.) and Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) were honored on the Second Team for singles.
The Beacons also welcome four new faces to this year's team.
UMass Boston will kick off their 2018 season when they travel to Texas to play three matches over Spring Break. The Beacons will open Little East play on Saturday March 31, when they host Bridgewater State University at 1 p.m.
