MEDFORD, Mass. – It was another busy day for the UMass Boston track and field teams as a total of 44 new personal bests were set at the 2012 Tufts University Snowflake Classic. Along with the 44 PB's, senior Anitra Kloczewiak set a new program record in the hammer throw Saturday afternoon.
Kloczewiak recorded a toss of 109-02 feet to post a 21st place finish overall in the event. As a team the men's squad finished in 6th place overall, while the women's team recorded an 11th place finish.
Also having a strong showing in Saturday's meet for the women's team was Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.) who placed first in the 400 meter dash with a new personal best of 57.63 seconds. Samara Faustin (Boston, Mass.) and Anisha Trappier (Taunton, Mass.) each qualified for the finals in the 100 meter dash, with Faustin finishing in third place (12.72) and Trappier in eighth place (13.24).
McGuffie and Faustin would also record top-10 finishes in the 200 meter dash. McGuffie earned sixth place with a time of 25.84 seconds, while Faustin earned a seventh place finish with her time of 26.05. In the 400 meter hurdles Ari Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded a new personal best with her time of 1:12.19 to earn 10th place overall.
Both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams recorded fourth place finishes in Saturday's meet to continue the Beacons strong showing. In the field events, Shannel Trappier (Taunton, Mass.) recorded a career best leap in the triple jump to earn 15th place (32-07.75). Katelyn Sheehan led the way for UMB in the discus throw with a toss of 96-02 feet. Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) finished in 28th place with a throw of 60-08 feet. In the shot put Nicole Aube (Westfield, Mass.) recorded a new personal best of her own with a final throw of 31-08.75 feet to earn 23rd place overall.
On the men's side of Saturday's meet Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) won his second straight high jump event with a leap of 6-09.75 feet to lead the way for the Beacons. Right behind him was Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) in second place (6-06.00) and Jahleel Moise (Brockton, Mass.) in fourth place (6-02.00).
Also having a strong showing on Saturday was Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, Mass.) and Julian Hubbard (Windsor, Maine) in the triple jump. Abdul finished in second place with a jump of 44-04.00 feet, while Hubbard recorded a new personal best of 44-00.00 feet to earn third place overall.
Fritz Gustave (Fall River, Mass.) also had a strong showing as the sprinter earned fourth place with a time of 23.06 seconds in the 200 meter dash. Gustave also finished in 14th place in the 100 meter dash with his time of 11.52 seconds.
Norbert Simon set a new personal best in the 200 meter dash with his time of 23.31 to earn a 12th place finish overall. Senior Henry Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) sprinted his way to a 16th place finish in the 400 meter dash with his final time of 52.08 seconds.
Distance runner Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) nabbed a 10th place finish in the 1,500 meter run with his time of 4:07.11. Fellow distance runner Tad Delaney (Halifax, Mass.) recorded a new personal best in the event with a time of 4:27.69. All four Beacons that competed in the hurdles recorded new personal bests to keep the momentum going for UMB.
The field events were also dominated by new personal bests following the strong showing by the Beacons high jumpers. In the long jump Tucker Gaye leaped his way to an 11th place finish with a final distance of 20-01.75 feet. Hart finished right behind him with his jump of 20-00.25 feet.
Jabari Woods (Randolph, Mass.) once again lead the way in the hammer throw with his toss of 111-04 to earn 24th place overall. Lenford Coote (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the top thrower in the shot put as he recorded a throw of 35-11.25 feet to earn 30th place.
Track and Field returns to action next Saturday when they compete in the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Invitational.
