BOSTON, Mass. – Led by senior Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) and newcomer Angelica Pizzi the UMass Boston men's and women's cross country teams got their 2013 season off to a great start at the Emmanuel College Fens Classic at the Fens in downtown Boston.
For Kerin, his senior season got off to a solid start as the Quincy native placed eighth overall with a time of 16:55 to lead the men's team. On the women's side Pizzi recorded a time of 12:55 to earn a seventh place finish. Overall the men's team finished 6th out of 7 teams, while the women's squad recorded an overall finish of 7th out of 8 teams.
After Kerin was Tad Delaney (Halifax, Mass.), who recorded a time of 17:25 to earn 21st place overall. Joe Miller (Hull, Mass.) crossed the finish line with the Beacons third fastest time of 20:38 (54th place). Chhenlee Ly (Leominster, Mass.) was next with his time of 21:36. Emilio Alvarez-Flores (Mexico City, Mexico) recorded a time of 22:51 to earn 61st place overall. Ed McDonald (Waltham, Mass.) closed out the afternoon for UMB with his time of 22:53 (62nd place).
On the women's side senior Ari Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded a time of 14:51 to earn 39th place. Danielle Valerie was next to cross the finish line for the Beacons with her time of 16:17 (55th place). Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) made her first appearance with the cross country program as she recorded a final time of 17:18. Closing out the day for the women's team was Ashley Cahill as the newcomer recorded a time of 19:36 to earn 63rd place overall.
The cross country teams will return to action on September 21 when they compete in the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Invitational in North Dartmouth.
