NEW YORK, N.Y.—Senior Katrina Edwards (Springfield, Mass.) tied her career-high with 19 points and Raven Kelsey (Boston, Mass.) ripped down 13 rebounds, to lead UMass Boston past Saint Catherine University (Minn.) in both team's opening game of the NYU Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston raced out to a 30-18 lead at the break and held on for their first win of the season.
Edwards and fellow senior Chantel Jordan (Brockton, Mass.) both poured in seven points in the fourth quarter, as the Beacons held off a late run by the Wildcats.
Edwards finished with a game-high 19 point on 8-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds and two assists. The senior brought down five offensive rebounds in the contest.
Jordan tacked on 14 points, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 performance from the line. The senior added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in an all-around strong performance.
Kelsey just missed out on a double-double, as the junior finished with eight points, 13 rebounds and a game-high six steals.
On the Wildcats side, Mari Lee led Saint Catherine with 18 points. Audra Clark (12 points) and Kennedy Jennings (11 points) joined Lee in double-figures, with both players finished with eight rebounds.
The Beacons jumped all over the Wildcats in the first quarter, as they ran out to an 11-4 advantage. Edwards sparked an 11-0 run to start the quarter, as she knocked down a lay-in on the opening possession, Over the next five minutes, Kelsey hit a pair of baskets, Jordan knocked down a jumper and senior Taje Burston (Springfield, Mass.) connected on a 3-pointer.
After missing their first 12 shots of the game, Saint Catherine hit a pair of baskets to close out the quarter and cut the deficit to 11-4.
The second quarter would be a much higher-scoring affair, as the two teams combined for 33 points. Saint Catherine cut the deficit to five points (23-18) with 2:44 to play in the half, only to have the Beacons go on a 7-0 run. Jordan started the run with a triple and Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.) and Edwards both hit layups in the final minute.
After stretching their lead out to a game-high 17 early in the third quarter, the Beacons saw the Wildcats creep back within nine by the end of the third stanza.
UMass Boston would try to put the game out of reach early in the fourth with a 5-0 run, only to have Saint Catherine cut the deficit to four with a 9-0 run of their own.
With the Beacons clinging to a 50-46 lead, Edwards registered a tip-in and freshman Alecia Quinones (Stoughton, Mass.) followed with a lay-up.
The Wildcats had one final response, with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 54-52, but Edwards and Jordan came through one more time. On the possession after Saint Catherine cut the deficit to two, Edwards hit a layup to make it 56-52 and then Jordan followed with a made 3-pointer and four-straight made free throws.
BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston finished the game shooting 36.6 percent (26-of-71) from the field and 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from distance. They held the Wildcats to a 36.1 percent (22-of-61) mark from the field and 1-of-12 showing (8.3 percent) from distance.
- The Beacons forced Saint Catherine into 28 turnovers, while posting 20 turnovers of their own.
- UMass Boston recorded a huge 17-3 advantage in bench points.
- Geary led the Beacons with a game-high five assists in the contest.
- Saturday's game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
