Volleyball Defeats Southern Maine for Conference Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Brooke Nemethy's (Oviedo, Fla.) match-high 10 kills and .667 attack percentage, volleyball notched their second conference win of the season as they defeated the University of Southern Maine by the final of 3-0 Thursday evening at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Beacons defeated the visiting Huskies by the finals of 25-7, 25-14, and 25-18.  With the win UMass improves to 8-4 on the year, 2-0 in the Little East Conference.  Southern Maine fell to 4-8, 0-2 in conference play.

For Nemethy her 10 kills came on 15 attempts, with freshman Molly Witzmann (Encinitas, Calif.) finishing second on the team with eight kills on 15 attempts (.333).  Blair Boyer (Encinitas, Calif.) stepped up and finished with five kills in two sets.  Southern Maine saw Annie Mitchell and Madalyn Terry each score four kills in the contest.

Setters Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) and Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) finished with 16 and 12 assists respectively, while for the Huskies Bridget Burns put-up five assists.

As a squad the Beacons scored 10 aces, with Rocha tallying four of those, two of which helped the Beacons to the second set victory.  Christine DuPuis led the defense with a match-high 11 digs, while Demi Ruder posted nine digs for the Huskies.

Volleyball returns to action on Saturday when they host Rhode Island College at 1 p.m. at North Quincy High School in a Little East Conference match.
