Volleyball Drops Two at Colorado College Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On the first day of the 2013 volleyball season the Beacons (0-2) faced two tough opponents in Augsburg College (Minn.) and 17th ranked Colorado College dropping both matches on day one of the Colorado College Invitational.

Match 1 – UMass Boston 1, Augsburg College 3

In the first match of the new year it was junior middle Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) who led the Beacons with 10 kills and a .269 hitting percentage.  Sophomore middle Molly Witzmann (Encinitas, Calif.) also finished in double-figures as she scored 10 kills on 23 attempts. 

The setter duo of Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Lacee Kilgore (Grand Junction, Colo.) combined for 43 assists respectively, with Rocha tallying a team-best 24.  On the defensive side of the ball it was Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) who finished with a team-best 18 digs, which was one short of tying the game high.  At the net Morrison tallied three of the Beacons six block assists, with the lone solo block going to Witzmann.

As a team the Beacons struggled early hitting -.033 in the first game.  However they did show improvement as the match continued hitting .154 in the second, .200 in the third, and .250 in the fourth.  The Beacons earned their lone win of the match in the second when they rallied to take a 26-24 victory.  Augsburg would take a 25-19 win in the first game, a 25-20 win in game three and a 25-21 decision in the fourth game.

For the Augsburg Ashley Peper was dominant all match scoring 23 kills on 46 attempts for a .391 hitting percentage.  Emily McCourt did all the work at setter totaling 50 assists in the win.  Katelyn Berens led the match with her 19 digs, while Colleen Ourada finished with two solo blocks and one block assist.

Match 2 – UMass Boston 0, No. 17 Colorado College 3

Against the nationally ranked Tigers, Patsy Boland led UMB with a team-high six kills on 21 attempts.  Rocha put-up 11 assists in the three game match and finished with a team-best seven digs.  Glavan continued her strong showing matching the team-high in digs as well. 

For the Tigers they used the 13 kills from Emily Phillips to earn their second victory of the day.  Setter Devon Lucero tallied 39 assists.  Defensively three Tigers finished with 10 or more digs with Sophie Merrifield recording a match-high 16.  At the net Kristen Liberty and Courtney Birkett each finished with three block assists.

In the first game Colorado defeated UMB 25-14.  In the second they handed the Beacons a 25-19 loss before walking away with the win following a 25-12 game three decision.

Volleyball returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Central College (Iowa) at 2 p.m. EST and Pacific University (Ore.) at 6 p.m. EST.
