Volleyball Splits On Day 2 of Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On the final day of the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University, volleyball picked-up their third straight win, but fell in the tournament finale to the 11th ranked Captains of CNU Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off of their first 2-0 start since 2010, the Beacons came out firing in the first set against Lawrence University as they earned a 25-13 win.  However, that early momentum did not last as the Beacons narrowly escaped Lawrence in the second and third sets with a 25-21 and 25-23 win respectively. 

In their final match of the tournament the Beacons could not catch their second wind as the host Captains cruised to the three set win, with a 25-11 win in the first, and a pair of 25-19 wins in the second and third sets.

Against Lawrence the Beacons hit a season-high .287 to earn their first 3-0 start since the 2010 campaign.  All-Tournament selection Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) put-up 21 digs to lead the defensive effort.  Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) combined for 12 kills and finished with a .400 hitting percentage.  Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass.) threw down 11 kills and led the match with a .417 hitting percentage.  Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio) tallied 14 assists in the victory.

Against their first nationally-ranked team of the season, Koen and Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) each tallied seven kills, however the offense as a whole struggled from start to finish hitting .095 on the day.

Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) combined for 11 assists, while Glavan posted 16 digs to cap-off a strong weekend for the senior. 


  • Saturday's match with Lawrence University marked the first-ever with the Beacons
  • The meeting with the Captains marked the fourth since 2012
  • Freshman Melanie Fyda (Park Ridge, Ill.) was also named to the All-Tournament team


The Beacons will make their home debut on Thursday when they host Emerson College at 6 p.m.
